SG800 Security Appliance Intelligently
Polices Firewall Holes

SUNNYVALE,
Calif., (August 21, 2002)
Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:
BCSI) today introduced the industry's
first port 80 security appliance,
the Blue Coat SG800, to intelligently
safeguard the use of mission-critical
enterprise Web applications
from malicious code and hacker
attacks. The Blue Coat SG800
is the first security appliance
to protect against port 80 vulnerabilities
that occur when enterprises
deploying web applications leave
port 80 open and allow Web threats
to enter the network.
The SG800 intelligently protects
against content-level security
vulnerabilities, securing applications
such as Web-enabled vertical
applications, Web-based email
and rich media. A prerequisite
to securing port 80 is the ability
to understand, in detail, all
Web traffic, protocols, infrastructure
components and applications,
with the ability to make security
and policy decisions on that
traffic as it enters the network.
The "intelligence"
of the SG800 comes from two
key capabilities working in
concert. First is the Web Knowledge
Framework, an object-level software
framework that reads and inspects
all Web traffic to understand
the type and nature of the content
entering the network. The software
forwards this information to
the second crucial element,
the Policy Processing Engine,
a set of patent-pending granular
policy algorithms that enable
enterprises to define and enforce
security policies. The Policy
Processing Engine classifies
all Web content, and based on
defined triggers, including
user attributes, destination
IP, time and content filter
category, makes security policy
decisions on the actions to
be taken. This includes not
only "allow" and "deny,"
but more than 30 content-level
actions such as "modify
header," "redirect
request," "transform
content," and "insert
cookie."
"Businesses today are challenged
to look more closely at their
Internet security infrastructure,
where firewalls and anti-virus
solutions alone cannot provide
the level of protection needed
in most enterprise and government
networks today," said Matthew
Kovar, director of security
solutions and services research
and consulting for the Yankee
Group. "Blue Coat's security
appliances go far beyond the
capabilities of traditional
proxy caching by delivering
policy-based, content-level
security on all inbound and
outbound Web traffic in an optimized
appliance."
A high-performance appliance,
the Blue Coat SG800 is optimized
to perform multiple Web security
functions that include Web-based
virus scanning, as well as content
security and URL filtering,
without imposing response-time
penalties on end-users.
"Access to secure Web content
throughout the typical work
day is critical in maintaining
productivity among our enterprise
users," said Bill Thomas,
director of IT operations for
HNTB Corporation, one of the
world's largest engineering
and architectural firms. "The
Blue Coat appliances are an
essential addition to the enterprise
security infrastructure, performing
a one-of-a-kind method of high-speed,
granular inspection of Web content
passing through the firewall."
The SG-800 supports multiple
Web security applications through
Blue Coat's strategic partnerships
with anti-virus providers Symantec
(NASDAQ: SYMC) and Trend Micro
(NASDAQ: TMIC), as well as alliances
with URL filtering providers
Secure Computing (NASDAQ: SCUR)
and Websense (NASDAQ: WBSN).
The SG800 can be easily implemented
with existing routers, switches,
firewalls and servers to reduce
the complexity, cost, and management
needed for comprehensive Web
security.
"This new class of Web
security appliance from Blue
Coat secures enterprise organizations
against Web-based threats that,
until now, have been able to
take advantage of a major chink
in the Web armor," said
Charles Dauber, vice president
of marketing for Blue Coat Systems.
"The Blue Coat SG800 increases
enterprise security performance
by inspecting identical Web
content once, and flagging it
as approved or denied. Unlike
other forms of current Web security
products, security staffs no
longer have to make a trade-off
decision of security versus
network performance."
Availability

The Blue Coat SG800 Security
Appliance is available today
